In the centre of the manḍala is Hayagrīva, trampling on snakes above a sun disc and lotus flower base. His central face is red, symbolising power; his right face is green, symbolising action; and his left face is white, symbolising peacefulness. A green horse’s head is on top of each head. Wearing an elephant-skin shawl and a tiger-skin skirt, he is adorned in bone ornaments and a skull crown. In his right hands he holds a vajra, khaṭvāṅga and sword; his top left hand is in the threatening mudrā and the remaining two hold a spear and noose. He is surrounded by unadorned quadrants and gateways of four colours; the outer area contains parasols, treasure vases, trees and head-covered monks. The protective rings of vajras, lotus petals and flames encircle this simplified maṇḍala.
