This is a portrait of a red wrathful protective deity, possibly a form of Tsu’i Marpo, who rides a blood-coloured horse through a sea of flames. Wearing a robe of orange silk, a green scarf, floral pantaloons, high boots and a white turban, he is adorned with a jewelled crown, jewel topknot and necklace. In his hands he brandishes a trident with a red pennant and a snare. The latter symbolically catches the life force of an enemy, depicted as a figure with his hands lassoed. A quiver of arrows is to his right and a sheathed sword to his left. His horse is adorned with ornaments of gold and silk, in front of which are various offerings. These include the rhinocerous horn, the earrings of the queen and general, elephant tusks, a branch of coral and auspicious jewels. In the background is a landscape dotted with taiga vegetation and rocks, with the sun, moon and clouds above. The depiction of the trident with one blade down is unusual.
